Powis Castle and Gardens

Powis Castle and Gardens is situated in the small border town of Welshpool, Powys. The property is owned and maintained by the National Trust. This property is not just a Welsh Castle but also has a beautiful mature garden with lakes, parkland which is home to some deer. The castle also has its own museum.

History of Powis Castle

The present castle dates back to the 13Th century and has been in possession of the national trust since 1952. The original Castle was built for the Welsh prince Gruffudd ap Gwenwynwyn.

Visiting Powis Castle

Powis Castle consists of many lovely decorated rooms. My favourite was the great staircase. This is the main focal point in the castle. It is believed to of been built between 1673 and 1685. there are paintings all-around the staircase including beautifully painted ceilings.

Sadly, the staircase is not open to the public to walk up due to instability but can still be viewed from below and the views up the stairs and the ceiling are a sight to behold they are amazing.

Inside the castle there are many interesting things to look out for and spot on the way around. Some of the items to look out for are the twelve caesers, Pietre dure table, the tiger, tiger and the stage coach. There are many more interesting artefacts around the castle including the paintings and books.

The Clive Museum

Powis Castle is also home to the Clive Museum. This museum holds 300 artefacts including a large collection from India and is the largest display of its kind in England.

Inside the Clive museum you will find items from India dating back thousands of years. On display you will find Tīpū Sultān’s magnificent state tent, which was seized by Edward Clive when Tīpū Sultān was killed and his wealth shared out between victors.

Castle gardens

The gardens at Powis castle are multi-layered with a range of terraces, flowered borders and woodland. These gardens date back around 300 years. Some are blasted out from the rock face which can be viewed from the lawn. This makes the gardens a lovely afternoon stroll, to view the castle from below looking up from the great lawn.

There are formal gardens and as you walk along you will find the paths through the small woodland and along past the pond. Powis Castle has long had its own orangery and the remains of the aviary terraces which used to be home to birds of prey.

A great day out

Like most national trust properties this one is an amazing day out for all the family and during the year they hold different events and Santa may even drop-in.
