Llyn Gwynant Campsite

Do you want to get to the heart of Snowdonia for a bit of back to nature camping?  Then this is the perfect site to head to.  What more do you want? No phone signals, open valleys, beautiful scenery.

The Campsite

This is a site that is basic but stunning.  It is based next to Nant Gwynant, a large open lake in the heart of Snowdonia.  The site itself has a few electric hook up pitches for campervans and caravans plus a select few for tents set around the front of the lake but the majority of the pitches are pitch where you like for tents.  Cars are not allowed around the tents and are parked around the edges of each camping field. 

They have plenty of toilets and showers plus a small shop selling the basic items.  In the washing up area of the site, they have large freezers for visitors to refreeze cool blocks, a microwave and a boiling water system for that much needed cup of coffee.

Activities

On the lake itself, you can hire kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards.   Take your own inflatables or even just have a swim if the weather is nice.  The water can be cold as the lake is fed by mountain streams flowing into the Afon Glaslyn river from the summit of Snowdon itself, bringing very cold currents so wetsuits are a good idea.

The campsite is a good base camp for walks up Snowdon.  Many of the paths are a short drive away from the site but the site does have walking trails leading from it and on towards the hills and valleys around it.  

The Lake

Llyn Gwynant lies on the Afon Glaslyn, in the Nant Gwynant valley. The lake is natural, having been formed by glacial action and is 120 acres in size. the lake holds a variety of fish and wildlife in and around its shores.

Local Wildlife

Around and in the lake you will find lots of animals and fish these include salmon, trout, sewin, frogs and toads and if you’re lucky you might find some eel.  Around the mountains of the campsites look out for badgers, foxes welsh mountain goats on the hillsides.  You may even see an otter or two down by the river,  sit back and relax and wait and see what you spot.

One of the main advantages of this site is that dogs are allowed,  swimming in the lake, night time campfires around the tent with friends and families being able to camp together.
