Eden Project

The Eden project is located in Cornwall 5 miles from the town of St Austell. It’s built within a reclaimed china clay pit. It consists of two giant domes that contain thousands of plants that you wander through and explore at your own speed.  The largest bio-dome is home to the largest indoor rainforest in the world.  The other bio done is the Mediterranean environment.  There is also an outdoor botanical garden.  

Location.  

This unique venue is located 5 miles from the Cornish town of St Austell which is where the local train station is based.  There is free parking onsite with electric charging available. The local bus service also stops close to the project.  

The Rainforest Dome.  

Inside this amazing building you will find hundreds of plants native to the rainforests of southeast Asia to west Africa and the tropical South America. This bio dome takes approximately 1.5 hours to walk around. For the brave there is as you go around a tree bridge walkway that has amazing views from the top of the dome overlooking the 1000s of plants inside.  The temperature inside the domes range from 18 to 35 degree centigrade so suitable clothing should be worn.   There is also an indoor waterfall that you can stop in front of for that perfect photo opportunity.  You may also see the roul – roul a ground dwelling partridge that lives in the dome.  

Some of the plants you will find in the rainforest dome include 

Cacao, Jade vine, Wild bananas, Pineapple, Vanilla ,Sugar, Santa Cruz water Lily

Mediterranean Dome 

Inside this bio dome you will find examples of plants from the Mediterranean, California, South Africa and Western Australia.  The Mediterranean dome takes approximately an hour to walk around enjoying the scent of herbs as you walk.  Inside you can also find the al fresco styling dining. This dome is slightly cooler with temperatures ranging from 9 – 25degrees Celsius.  As you walk around keep your eyes out for the Rites of Dionysus statues.  The Dionysus myths amongst the oldest that link mankind and nature.  

Some of the plants in this done include 

Cotton, Olive trees, Citrus trees, Chilli pepper, Grape vine, Aloe.  

Outdoor Gardens. 

These are based around the domes and are part of the old clay mine.  The barren land has been transformed into amazing outdoor gardens.  There are approximately 20 different plant based exhibits from gardens to vegetables. 

Eating at the Eden Project

There is a selection of food outlets located around the project. From pizza to ice cream. They cater for all including vegans, vegetarians, meat eaters and all in between.  Or bring your own and have a picnic.
